Evaluating SAP Ariba Procurement Integration: What to Ask Before You Commit

Guide
Procurement leaders shopping for software that connects to SAP Ariba are usually solving a narrower problem than the marketing suggests: can this tool actually get purchase requisitions, RFQ events, and purchase orders into Ariba without manual rework. That's a fair question to lead with, and it's worth pressing vendors on before you sign anything.
**Start with the documents, not the demo.** Ask exactly which document types the integration handles. For SAP Ariba procurement integration specifically, you want a straight answer on purchase requisitions, RFQ events, and purchase orders — not a vague claim of "full Ariba support." If a vendor can't name the documents, they probably haven't built the mapping yet.
**Ask about the protocol and the credentials.** Any real SAP Ariba procurement integration has to speak to the SAP Ariba Network APIs, and that requires a per-tenant OAuth application. Ask whether that application exists today, whether it's been used with a live tenant, and who owns the credentials — you, or the vendor. This is where a lot of "integrations" turn out to be roadmap items rather than working connections.
**Check the field mapping.** A generic "we sync with Ariba" claim isn't enough. Ask how vendor records map to SupplierId, how line items map to LineItems with ItemNumber, and how compliance tags map to CommodityCode under UN/SPSC. If the vendor can show you the mapping table, that's a good sign they've done the underlying work, even if the connection isn't live yet.
**Understand test mode versus production.** Some tools will happily "complete" an export and hand you a document number that never touched your ERP. That's fine for evaluating the mapping logic, but it's not the same as a live export. Ask directly: does this export reach a real SAP Ariba tenant, or does it return a placeholder because no credentials are configured?
**Weigh the trade-off honestly.** If you're on the Ariba Network and need production-ready exports now, a tool that's still in test mode isn't a fit yet, no matter how clean its mapping looks. If you're evaluating early and want to see how the mapping would work before committing, that's a different, reasonable use case.
Complyra's [SAP Ariba integration](/integrations/sap-ariba) is a case in point: the field mapping for requisitions, RFQ events, and purchase orders exists, but the OAuth application isn't built yet, so exports currently run in test mode only. If you're mapping out your [procurement automation](/procurement-automation) plans and want to see where the pieces fit, it's worth a look.
Complyra checks product and supplier information against regulatory requirements to support procurement decisions. It does not issue certifications or guarantee legal compliance; final responsibility for compliance remains with the buyer and supplier.
