Methodology

How the compliance check works

The same engine runs in the product, in the free compliance checker and on every supplier match. This page describes what it does, in the order it does it, and where its limits are.

The check, step by step

  1. Inputs

Product name, description, category, materials, optional explicit regulation ids, and destination regions.

  2. Triggering

Every regulation in the dataset has trigger categories and trigger keywords. A regulation is selected when the product category matches, a keyword appears in the description, or the regulation is named explicitly. If destination regions are given, regulations whose regions do not include them are dropped.

  3. Auto-fail conditions

Each regulation records conditions that fail it outright, such as a material declared above a limit or a use the regulation prohibits. If one matches the product text, the result is fail with raised confidence.

  4. Materials and substance limits

Declared materials are compared against the regulation's blocked materials and restricted substances with recorded limits. Matches lower the result to partial or fail and are named in the notes.

  5. Documents

The regulation's required documents are attached to the result so the buyer knows what to request from the supplier.

  6. Result and confidence

The result is pass, partial, fail or unknown. Confidence starts from a per-regulation base value and moves with the strength of the evidence found in the input; it expresses how much the input supported the conclusion, not a legal probability.

The dataset

Each of the 47 regulations records: name, issuing authority, effective date, category, jurisdiction and regions, trigger categories and keywords, blocked materials, restricted substances with limits and units where the regulation sets them, required certification types and documents, auto-fail conditions, a base confidence, the official source URL, a summary of penalties and an evidence renewal period. The dataset is maintained in code and changes go through review. The full table is on the regulation index.

Limits of the check

  • It evaluates the information provided. A product described without its materials cannot be checked against substance limits.
  • It identifies requirements and evidence; it does not verify that a supplier's documents are genuine. That is the administrator review on supplier applications.
  • Keyword triggering can include a regulation that does not apply to an edge-case product, or miss one for an unusual description. Explicit regulation selection is available in the product for that reason.
  • Regulations change. Pages show the dataset's effective date and link to the official source, which is authoritative.

Complyra checks product and supplier information against regulatory requirements to support procurement decisions. It does not issue certifications or guarantee legal compliance; final responsibility for compliance remains with the buyer and supplier.
